Retro-Post: Day 4 - Kaoh Siung/Kenting

Ah-Mei insisted that we try the quintessential breakfast of a 蛋餅 (egg pita wrap) with tuna, cheese, and corn. It was delicious!

Our bus to Kenting wasn't until around 11am so we went around the property and they showed me all the things they were growing, which is a lot! Let's see if I remember it all.

Leeks

Mangoes the size of a peach

Huge pineapple

Baby melon

Bamboo

Bitter melon

Corn

Bananas

Eggplant

Yam Leaves

Pumpkin

Smaller pineapple
Unlabelled means I've forgotten but there were a lot of herbs and things.

We were driven to the bus stop and then about 2 hours later, we were in sunny Kenting. When we got off the bus we asked for directions to our hotel. Some kid gave us directions and then rode over on his scooter just as we were about to take a wrong turn. How helpful! After we checked in we wanted to head out but it started raining really hard! So we went back inside to bum around until it stopped.

Rain's a-coming!

Finally the rain stopped and we went to have a meal at the noodle shop that we saw the kid we got directions from. Not bad but lots of flies hanging around. At that point I already had about 17 bug bites so I was wary of anything that flew.

We decided to walk around the town, Heng Chun. Lucky for us the weather was quite mild because of the rain otherwise we wouldn't have been able to walk as much as we did. We discovered that Heng Chun was the town where they shot scenes from a famous Taiwanese movie called Cape No. 7. I've never seen it but I dutifully took pictures. We also found that this town was surrounded by a wall and there were four doors, one for each direction. So now we had a goal and decided to find every door!

The store to the left was part of the movie Cape. No. 7 but
I was more interested in the weird potted plants they had everywhere.

Supposedly there were monkeys here.

A post office from the film.

The main character's house.

Some old men were playing croquet along the wall.

Starting from the West Door, we found the South Door (which was annoying because it was the only door that had parts of the wall broken so it was hard to find), and the East Door. According to the tourist map of Kenting, there was a location that was a natural fire pit close by so we took a detour there before finding the North Door.

Some enterprising people were selling firecrackers, yams and popcorn to bake over the fire. We made some popcorn which turned out to be sweet. It was hard work but we did it and then ate our efforts.

The water is steaming!

After that bit of fun, we headed back to find the last door!

Pretty!

Dinner was an ordeal. After the walk around the walls we headed back to the hotel to rest a bit. We came out for dinner around 8pm and so nothing was really open at all! We found a hot pot place and just went there.

 End of Day 4!
